I designed the UX flows and interactions for Target’s College Stylist Bot on Kik, a popular chat bot app that many teens install on their mobile phones. The objective was to pair teens with an expert influencer stylist to provide dorm inspiration, DIY ideas, and college advice to promote Target’s products.

Flows

I devised flows to define interactions users would have with a bot that would suggest dorm room decor based on their selected options.

Introductions

Studies show that humans anthropomorphize robots and interact with them as if they were human, even if they are cognizant that they are speaking to a robot. So, a proper friendly introduction was not to be skipped! After introducing itself, I decided to let the robot ease the user into the experience by simply presenting 2 options to choose from to determine the user’s preferences. This fun interactivity took away the headache of decision making and allowed the app to bring up content tailored to the user’s style.

Influencers

We partnered with three influencers who had recently graduated from college. Each influencer uploaded a series of videos onto their YouTube channels to convey their dorm room aesthetic and provide advice for college students. Once the user was paired with an influencer that represented their style, they got to choose whether they wanted to directly shop for products or be inspired by the influencer’s recommendations.

Product Categories

In the shopping experience, the user selects the category she is interested in, so they bot does not overwhelm the user with too many options.

Shop DIY and Dorm Rooms

Users can shop DIY projects and products within dorm rooms, for a creative twist and high-level view of how all the room decor come together.
